Rigid Tensegrity

R Buckminster Fuller patented the octet truss in 1961.

Octet trusses can not only be flat but formed into all sorts of curved shapes, such as cigar-shaped hulls

for use in airplanes, ships, submarines, cars, trains, silos, tanks, or any other volume-enclosing shapes.

The tension and compression elements may be separated out to reduce the weight and cost.
