Fuller found a way to translate information from curved to flat surfaces

& vice versa in such a manner that there was minimal distortion of the data.

His technique works for polygons whose edges are equal,

such as a tetrahedron, octahedron, cube, icosahedron, vector equilibrium, dodecahedron, etc.

He preferred the icosahedron because it has the greatest

number of equilateral triangles.

It makes no difference whether the data is on the outside or inside surface.
